Tesla, Inc. was founded in July 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Named in honor of inventor Nikola Tesla, the company's master plan was to build a high-performance electric sports car to shed the stigma of EVs, then use that revenue to create more affordable, mass-market electric vehicles
